Lowry regularly visited west Cumbria, in particular Maryport, in the 1950s and 1960s to see close friends, the Aspatria born artist Sheila Fell, and the Rev Geoffrey Bennett, who, before he became a vicar, was a bank manager in Cleator Moor and Maryport.
